We were tasked with converting a former pizza baking school into an all-day cafe & restaurant in South Slope Brooklyn. The restaurateur requested a bright and welcoming space, while bringing a level of sophistication to each phase of the day, whether that be the morning coffee rush, the lunchtime digital nomad, or evening family pizza dinner.
We introduced new finishes with bands of blackened oak and brass for the kitchen counter cladding bordering the dining area, while natural finished maple flooring and butcher block counters created bright surfaces to serve as a backdrop for the range of uses. Strategic decisions were made to retain certain finishes, such as finishing new areas in the same existing 2x2 white square tile for a sense of continuity to the space. The light fixtures and furniture was chosen to create a dialog between the different programmatic elements – transitioning between the coffee counter, kitchen production counter, and customer seating.
